What is an EIN number?
For businesses, an Employer Identification Number (EIN) serves as a Social Security number. In order to keep track of businesses’ tax filings and returns, the IRS assigns them unique EINs.
Tax Identification Number (TIN), Tax ID, are other names for an EIN. Taxes, loans, legal activity, and business licenses allow the government to keep track of what businesses are doing.
For those who have lost or forgotten their EIN, here are a few ways to locate EIN online:
Letter of Confirmation of EIN
An IRS confirmation letter with your EIN should have been sent to you once you received your number. Your application would have either been sent via email or a mailed letter, depending on how you applied.
Other Personal Documents
Your business’s documents should contain your confirmation letter if you cannot locate EIN online. These are some documents that need your business’ EIN:
Federal tax returns
Business loan applications
Government forms
Business licenses or permits
Business credit report
Business bank account statements
Payroll documents
Contact the IRS
If you are still unable to locate EIN online, you can contact the ein-number-application.com. The IRS’ Business and Specialty Tax Line is available. Monday-Friday at (919) 504–6664. 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Time zone.
Your EIN will be provided over the phone by a representative. The IRS will require you to provide your social security number, driver’s license, or another form of identification before receiving your EIN.
Once your EIN number has been found, it is a good idea to put it in a safe place to make finding it easily next time.
HOW TO FIND ANOTHER COMPANY’S EIN
If you need to look up another company’s EIN, first identify whether it is private or public.
Publicly traded companies will list their EIN in their SEC filings. You can locate EIN online on the Securities and Exchange Commission’s website. In most cases, you can find a company’s EIN on the first page of its filings.
The search is more challenging if the company is private.
There are a few ways to find a company’s EIN:
- Contact the accounting or payroll department of the company.
- Ask a current employee (their EIN will be on their pay stub).
- The company should purchase credit reports.
- There are several sites that let you get copies of a company’s credit report
- If you don’t have an EIN, look up the number in a paid database like LexisNexis or EIN Finder.
Regardless of how you do business, you’ll likely require an EIN for some transactions. To keep this number easily accessible, keep it nearby and in a safe place.
You can still locate EIN online and business documents or contact the IRS if you’ve lost them.
